A Book and a Chat with Steve Berry

(There is a slight gap at the begining of the show when I lost all my connections, but the show is one not to miss.)

New York Times best selling author Steve Berry is a person I use as a example to other authors, and it was interesting upon having him back as my guest on tonight’s show, that he uses the same example of what happened to him when talking to other users.

Steve has been writing since 1990, and it took him 12 years and 85 rejections (over five different editions) to finally sell a manuscript. Now nine years later his books are printed in 40 languages, and he has kept 12 million readers in 51 countries on the edge of their seats with the exploits of his hero “Cotton Malone”.

Cotton has been having adventures all over the world to all parts of Europe (The Templar Legacy, The Paris Vendetta), Asia (The Venetian Betrayal), Antarctica (The Charlemagne Pursuit), the Middle East (The Alexandria Link) and China (The Emperors Tomb). It’s no wonder that he told Steve that he wanted some time off so will not be back in a fresh story until 2013. That is however not before one last adventure before his break this time through Steve’s latest smash hit of an adventure; “The Jefferson Key” takes our hero to America.

Steve Berry
is such a great guest always sharing with us his latest news as well as a few hints along the way about what we might be reading from him next. Now this can also be shared in two ebooks which will introduce to you or perhaps follow up on other characters that appear in both this new book and the "Emperors Tomb" in the form of “The Balkan Escape” and “The Devils Gold”.

We also learned in this show about Steve’s trip to the Middle East along with other “Thriller/Mystery" writers to visit the troops and the great reception they received there.

So what about The Jefferson Key, which is officially launched tomorrow (May 17th)?

Four United States presidents have been assassinated—in 1865, 1881, 1901, and 1963—each murder seemingly unrelated and separated by time.

But what if those presidents were all killed for the same reason: a clause in the United States Constitution—contained within Article 1, Section 8—that would shock Americans?

This question is what faces former Justice Department operative Cotton Malone in his latest adventure. When a bold assassination attempt is made against President Danny Daniels in the heart of Manhattan, Malone risks his life to foil the killing—only to find himself at dangerous odds with the Commonwealth, a secret society of pirates first assembled during the American Revolution.

In their most perilous exploit yet, Malone and Cassiopeia Vitt race across the nation and take to the high seas. Along the way they break a secret cipher originally possessed by Thomas Jefferson, unravel a mystery concocted by Andrew Jackson, and unearth a centuries-old document forged by the Founding Fathers themselves, one powerful enough—thanks to that clause in the Constitution—to make the Commonwealth unstoppable.

The response the author has received from the book is amazing, as he stated normally there are a few who do not like the book for one reason or another yet so far he has received nothing but praise, and I can tell you that I for one also think this is his best book so far!

When you get reviews like…

“One of the most spellbinding and ingenious openings in all of thrillerdom. The cast of characters is huge but every one of them is memorable. The action is intense and masterfully choreographed. As always with Steve Berry, you’re educated about significant things while your knuckles are turning white and the pages are flying. Easily Cotton Malone’s most epic, swashbuckling adventure.” —David Baldacci

"The Constitution. . . secret codes . . . loads of history. . . AND pirates! What else does anyone need? The Jefferson Key won't just haunt your nights--it'll haunt your life. Cotton Malone is coming back to the scariest place of all: Home." —Brad Meltzer

"THE JEFFERSON KEY starts with a bang and holds the reader in its grip until the last page. Fascinating American history, up-to-the-minute politics, pulse-pounding action. This is a story Mitch Rapp would love." —Vince Flynn

You know it’s a sure hit that will soon have the name of Steve Berry and Cotton Malone back on the New York Times Best Sellers list.

A Book and a Chat with Anne Greer

Originally I was going to have Tim Vandehey one of the co-writers of “The Chimp Who Loved Me” instead it went one better when I had on tonight’s “A Book and a Chat” the other co-authors whose real life stories go to make up a truly humorous and enjoyable book, Veterinary Chiropractioner, Farmer and chat show host… “Annie Greer”.

Let’s face it, when you read under your guests description that they have “always been English” and the first question they ask you on your show is “PG Tips or Typhoo” (that tea), followed by “love or hate marmite” you know it’s going to be a show that would be filled with a lot of laughter and so it was.

The Chimp Who Loved Me is a collection of very funny real-life accounts of Annie's strange life with animals. The stories are “laugh out loud” funny, with some slightly strong language, but then these are true stories from real life… it shows the wonder of animals from the dogs and cats we're all so familiar with to the cougars and wolves and chimps that come into our lives from time to time

You know it's going to be a fun read, when for instance you read from the first story about Sammy the chimpanzee…

"All I could think was, 'Oh God! I'm going to be sexually assaulted by a chimp!' I pictured the 911 call. I saw the operator laughing so uncontrollably that she forgot to send help. I tried to peel Sammy's pinching, prying hands off my naked, wet body and realized that I had to get some clothes on."

The show as you can expect is full of laughter, English humour and stories about Annie’s animals, including how a person tried to steal her flying squirrel by stuff it down the front of their trousers.

About The Chimp Who Loved Me

The Chimp Who Loved Me is a collection of true stories from the life and times of Annie Greer, a veterinary chiropractitioner, animal healer, radio host, speaker, farmer's wife and all-around magnet for bizarre animal behavior. When Annie and Tim Vandehey, a professional writer, met in 2006 and began talking about Annie's endless trove of strange and pants-wettingly funny tales about drill sergeant sheep and insane veterinary clinic customers, a book was born.

Infused with Annie's trademark dry English wit and Tim's storytelling panache, The Chimp Who Loved Me is a sort of twisted love child of Dave Barry, David Sedaris and James Herriot of All Things Bright and Beautiful fame. If you're sick of the treacly sweetness of animal books like Marley and Me or Dewey and crave twisted tales of sex, poop, pee and death, where apes throw donuts at chefs during dinner parties and stoned veterinary students dispense bizarre advice to puzzled dog show contestants, then you won't be able to put The Chimp Who Loved Me down...until it hits you in the nose because you're reading in bed, silly.

It is a great book, a must to be left in the bathroom for visitors, whom you know are enjoying the stories when you hear the sounds of laughter coming from the smallest room.

A Book and a Chat with "Molly Roe"

Until about five years ago, my guest on today's a book and a chat "Molly Roe" had written only only academic papers, but after following her family history through her hobby of genealogy lead her to produce her first, but certainly not last novel "Call Me Kate: Meeting the Molly Maguires".

her writing combines family genealogy, Irish and coal region lore, local history, and imagination to create historical fiction for young people.

During the show we were told many fascinating details about the history of Pennsylvania and the "Molly Maguires". the whole history of the area and the people has been investigated in great detail by Molly, not only for her current novel "Call me Kate" but as we heard during the show for a follow up novel (or two).

"Call Me Kate: Meeting the Molly Maguires"is dramatic and adventuresome, yet expressive of daily life in the patches of the hard coal region during the Civil War era. This novel will appeal to readers of the Dear America series, as well as more mature readers who will enjoy the story's rich context and drama.

As a junior high teacher, Molly has been able to not only share this book with her students, but also see how the knowledge has lead some of them to carry out their own investigation into the past. The book has proven so popular and able to provide not only education but a great story, that Molly Roe recently was the the silver recipient in the Mom’s Choice Awards.

So sit back and listen to show or else download it's mp3 file and listen later to "A Book and a Chat with Molly Roe"

Today I am so please to have as my guest on the show "Julia Hoban", author of the fantastic novel "WILLOW", which wile produced as a YA novel has been enjoyed, as Julia explains during the show by readers of all ages, not just in the America's but now all over the world.

As always Julia provided a fascinating incite not only to the latest news about her book, but in the art of writing, something that will be of interest and I hope help many inspiring authors.

Not only that, but Julia kindly set up a competition for me to run on my blog, details of which can be found towards the end of this blog..

Also during tonight's entertaining show, we heard about the books success around the world from already being on its second print in Spain, to being launched in Germany, China and Taiwan. The book is also being launched in the UK this month though under a different name, becoming "SCARRED" a name which in many ways describes the book better than Willow"

As part of the pre-launch work in the UK Julia shared with us a wonderful article, she wrote for the The Daily Telegraph, one of the top newspapers in Britain.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/fashion/shoppingandfashion/7369893/The-power-of-a-parasol.html

The show was littered with interesting incites and anecdotes, which was enjoyed by all those who were listening or in the chat room, and is sure to be a much followed up show.

HERE ARE THE CONTEST DETAILS:

"In Willow there are references to several books, all except one of these books actually exist, though some might be not that easy to find online.

QUESTION: What is the one book mentioned in Willow whose name Julia made up?

The contest will close this Friday March 12th, with the winning entry receiving a $25 Barnes and Noble voucher. Entries must be made in the blog comments area on my main site.

A Book and a Chat with "Frank F Fiore"

If like myself you like the type of adventure novels written by Clive Cussler and Tom Clancy then my guest on tonight,s show has a book for you. Frank F. Fiore is a best selling author of over 50,000 copies of his non-fiction books. Now Frank has turned his talents to action-adventure novel "CyberKill".

Frank shared with us during the show that the actual writing and editing of the book has taken around ten years as Frank has honed his writing skill to produce this "must read" finished article.

Indeed as Frank explained, some of the items which might have been a bit hard to believe as possible ten years ago, are now actually available and used in warfare and espionage.

Frank explained his writing process and how his transition from non-fiction writer to fiction author has taken place. How from the book being a POD (print on demand) book, has now been picked up by TrapDoor Books, where not only are they using modern networking skills, but also have the book out as free-to-play Flash Game where it has just hit 50,000 players, with an 18% click through rate. (http://www.flashpromo.com/games/cyberkill)

Frank went on to let us know the three book series he is currently working on "The Chronicle's of Jeremy Nash" as well as the the book he stills wants to produce.

The show proved to be both interesting and entertaining, so why not tune in now or download the file to listen to another time, to "A Book and a Chat with Frank F Fiore"

A Book and a Chat with "Lori Finnila"

One of the great things about running a radio show is the fact that not only do you have a chance to interact and learn from so many interesting people, you also get a chance to share and hopefully help listeners. My guest today on a book and a chat is one such fascinating person. Author, chat show host, and survivor Lori Finnila.

Though the show and scratched the surface of this fascinating lady, we were able to see in the items that she shared with us, what a life she had lead. From being an aspiring model and doing film work, through being abused in so many different ways, Lori has trodden a path through life that many would think only happen in films or on TV.

Being attacked while in hospital, which lead to her suffering a brain injury to perhaps hearing about the plot to kill JFK Jn, Lori's story is one of suffering a courage.

In her books as well as on her own radio show "Women Empowerment" Lori has with her honesty and courage, been able provide help and encouragement to many dealing in items from "domestic violence, and homelessness to brain injury's"

The show is a very interesting thirty minutes that all should listen to, just to see the strength and fortitude of this fascinating lady.

"Across the Pond" News

It's been a while since I passed on any news about my book, perhaps you thought there hasn't been any?

REVIEWS:

My total on Amazon is now numbering "103"

Since the last time I wrote about reaching the magic "100" I have received a five star and two four star reviews. Here are a few snippets of what the reviews say...

"...a cute love story. Highly recommended for teens."

"Ahhh, young love! This book reminded me of what it was like to fall in love. The young characters were so sweet, I wanted to meet them. This is an easy read and definitely worth your time."

"This is a great read for tweens and teens - and the rest of us who still love YA fiction. There is romance, adventure, misunderstandings and even a big bully you can watch get his comeuppance! Fred comes from England and stays with Brit and her family in America while his parents go to Australia. While he's there, he and Brit fall in love.

Brit and Fred are funny and endearing. I admit it took me a few pages to really get into the story, but when I did, I couldn't stop reading! It's also fun to watch Fred work out all the differences between the languages of the two countries. All in all, Across the Pond is an enchanting story of first love."

A Book and a Chat with "Dianne Castell"

If you like a down to earth romance novel, with humor, plenty of twists perhaps a ghost or two and a happy ever after ending then books by my special radio show guest tonight are for you.

Dianne Castell is an USA Today award winning author whose books are ideal for anybody wanting to escape from this world for a moment and find themselves in the romantic southern states.

Her books are down to earth not one of those flowery romantic novels that use words almost from another age. They are modern romantic novels that keep you turning the pages to find out what happens next, with humor nor far away they are great fun to read.

Listen to tonight's fun and enjoyable show as we discuss about her writing, how she started and what she is working on now.

Learn how she does not have time for her hobbies because of her writing, but when she lists of her hobbies as cleaning toilets you might understand that is perhaps not a bad thing.

Two Books and Two Chats

Sometimes you just have to go that extra mile to bring fantastic people and entertainment to others. Today was one of those special days, when I had not one but two blog talk radio shows.

MY FIRST GUEST:

"Not every woman who rides the fertility treatment roller coaster winds up like Octomom." is how my first guests book is discribed.

Lisa Lipkind Leibow was born and raised in Leominster, Massachusetts.

After being stuck at her office on 9/11, a month-long siege on metro Washington, DC by a sniper, and discovering that the other parents at her twins’ preschool thought her au pair was her sons’ mom. She settled for different lifestyle and traded the billable hour for fiction writing. Listen as we discuss her life and her new book "DOUBLE OUT AND BACK"

http://www.blogtalkradio.com/Across-the-Pond/2009/09/10/A-Book-and-a-Chat-Lisa-Lipkind-Leibow

MY SECOND GUEST:

Shobhan Bantwal was born and raised in India and came to the United States as a young bride in an arranged marriage.

She has published short fiction in literary magazines and articles in a number of publications. Writing plays in her mother tongue (Indian language—Konkani) and performing on stage at Indian-American conventions are some of her hobbies.

A fascinating lady talking about her books "THE DOWRY BRIDE", "THE FORBIDDEN DAUGHTER" both dealt with controversial subjects in Indian society.

And her new release "THE SARI SHOP WIDOW" listed to her enjoyable interview as Bollywood comes to writing.

STORYHEART SUNDAY UK BLOG - THIS ROYAL THRONE OF KINGS

I was thinking about what to write in todays Sunday Blog, when something my guest on yesterdays "A Book and a Chat" (Shelley Seale) said made me think, in fact I did mention it in yesterdays blog.

The number of homeless children in India is Twenty Five Million, but how could that relate to say the number of people in various states within the USA.

In doing this I started thinking about England and how large a country Americans imagine it to be.

The name "England" is derived from the Old English word Englaland, which means "land of the Angles". The Angles were one of the Germanic tribes that settled in England during the Early Middle Ages. The Angles came from the Angeln peninsula, flanked on either side by the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. The oldest proto-human bones uncovered in the area date from 700,000 years ago/

Size wise, if we are just talking about England in comparison to US states, it would be the 32 largest in between Louisiana and Mississippi at 50,346 sq miles. England is such a small island, that the most you can be from the sea at any time is approximately 70 miles. There is a tree in Morton Derbyshire is marked as the center of England, the actual point is just outside Coton in the Elms in Derbyshire.

So England is small, narrow, yet the immigration levels have pushed population density in England to a higher level than any other major country in Europe. Within the European Union, only the island of Malta has a higher population density.

Population of England from the 2008 census was 61,000,000 people, so how does that figure compare to the American states?

California has by far the largest population of any American state with 36,756,666, Texas has 24,326,974. New York 19,490,297 and Florida 18,328,340 after which we're down to states under 13,000,000.

Of course like many states in American, England has more than it's fair share of illegal immigrants many coming from Europe and the eastern block, this made a lot more easy since the opening of the Channel Tunnel.

So next time something comes up about such and such going on in England, or how Britain stood against the might of Germany on it's own for two years before America joined in WWII just remember what a small dot of land England is.

Or as Shakespeare put it in Richard II

This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle,
This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,
This other Eden, demi-paradise,
This fortress built by Nature for herself
Against infection and the hand of war,
This happy breed of men, this little world,
This precious stone set in the silver sea,
Which serves it in the office of a wall
Or as a moat defensive to a house,
Against the envy of less happier lands,--
This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England.

A Book and a Chat with "Joanne Sundell"

Tonight's "Book and a Chat" blog radio show was with historical romance author JOANNE SUNDELL.

Joanne grew up reading romance, falling in love with heroes and heroines from Regency England to the American West, from London’s pubs to Colorado’s ski slopes, loving that moment when the hero and heroine meet and fall in love. That moment to Joanne is the moment when Jane Eyre meets Edward Rochester, when Elizabeth Bennett meets Mr. Darcy — that’s the heart-stopping, passionate moment for Joanne in romance.

That moment is what led her to attempt traditional, old-fashioned, historical romance. Joanne sold her first book, Matchmaker, Matchmaker, in 2005 to Five Star-Gale, Cengage Learning, for their Expressions Line, a combination of romance and women’s fiction. Subsequent sales include A…My Name’s Amelia, The Parlor House Daughter, and her latest book Meggie’s Remains, and The Quaker and the Confederate series, Hearts Divided and Hearts Persuaded. Her books have been reviewed nationally by Publisher’s Weekly, Booklist, Library Journal, and Romantic Times. With her three children grown and off on their own adventures, Joanne lives part-time in Colorado and California along with her husband and their entourage` of felines and huskies. Joanne’s writing groups include Romance Writers of America, Colorado Romance Writers, Los Angeles Romance Writers, Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers, and Women Writing the West.

Radio Progs, Literary Dogs, and Helpful Blogs

It's been a busy week on the radio side with some fantastic shows and guests on my blog radio show "A BOOK AND A CHAT".

I have been very lucky with my guests, and the response and feed back has been nothing but good. So much so that there seldom seems to be a day go by without an email or a message asking if such and such a writer could be a guest.

I am now, or so it seems going to shows on three nights a week, with even these dates filled for much of the next couple of months. Up and coming guests range from bloggers to reviewers to writers and publicist. Hopefully all will enjoy their chat over a cup of tea, in the friendly fun format I always try and promote.

I have been asked recently to create a couple of guest blogs about doing a radio show, the first of which can be found at

http://marketmynovel.com/2009/08/how-to-find-a-good-online-radio-show.html

I was also asked in another interview for the pitfalls and drawbacks of blog radio, guest no shows etc. One item I did forget, which was brought home to me over the last few days is the fact that to do a show, I have to shut the windows and turn off the air conditioning or fan while doing the show, to avoid background noise. in the humidity we've had on the east coast the last week, this is definitely not a good thing.

For those of you who caught the show on Friday with The Story Siren, we had a little dog interruption on one of the calls, as well as discussing Kristi's own dog, Xander who appears on her Vlogs. Well if you check "The Story Siren" today you see Xander can also help put book cases together.

Many blogs are full of helpful advice, for writers and readers, places to go, books to read, free things etc. I even did my own "Book Promotion on a Budget" five day blog to help people. On Wednesday I will hopefully be producing a blog with some more helpful locations for software and advice.

As for the AMAZON reviews... the number at the Deli counter has not ticked over and I'm still standing at...

"The Story Siren" did a great recap of the show...(in her words) which I'll share so it gives you an idea of how it went.

The Story Sirens Recap:

* Well there was an introduction! ha!
* We talked about how books can help with things like: self esteem for example
* That I was an "invisible" person in high school, I related to The Opposite of Invisible by Liz Gallagher.
* I showed up for my first swim practice in a two piece.
* Books are an escape!
* Xander is my Rotten-weiler. Everyone loves him, especially Cat.
* I've gotten to meet other bloggers. I mentioned Chelsea of the Page Flipper and Lauren of Shooting Stars Mag. I'm amazed that you can have real friendships that develop online!
* Why I like reading YA: relate to the characters and Fantastic Writers! They are the complete package!
* Vlogs
* That I can't help buying books! Even if I already have them.
* My Favorite books from this year: well the ones I remembered to mention: Ballads of Suburbia by Stephanie Kuehnert, Willow by Julia Hoban, and Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater.
* The YA Connection, that is in retirement at the moment.
* The genre that I wish I could read more of: fantasy! Diana Peterfreund author of Rampant asked this one!
* Cindy of Cindy's Love of Books stopped by
* Cindy asked what was the one thing about blogging that surprised me the most? That authors are accessible! You can talk to them and everything, that's just crazy!
* Cindy's favorite book she mention was Willow by Julia Hoban. Lots of Willow talk.
* We couldn't pick a favorite author!
* Also, thanks to Adele of Persnickety Snark, I remembered I loved Going Too Far by Jennifer Echols.
* Book Blogger Appreciation Week, started by My Friend Amy. And my 10 nominations!
* Vania of Reverie Book Reviews stopped by.
* V asked what's one of the hardest thing about bloggin? My reviews! I stink at writing them!
* Steph asked what books I read and loved as a teen? I read James Patterson and Micheal Crichton, loved the Jurassic Park books. I didn't read teen books, there weren't really any. Loved Goosebumps and Babysitters Club when I was younger.
* Talked about the fact that you can read YA at any age, and the recent negative email and comments that were made on the blog.
* Diana from The Book Resort called in.
* Diana asked where do I see YA trending? We need a new "vampire" I'm predicting unicorns, zombies, faeries and angels!
* Khy from Frenetic Reader stopped by too!
* Khy asked what books have gotten overlooked? I mentioned The Dairy Queen series by Catherine Gilbert Murdock.
* Team Unicorn!
* Plus a few other things that I might have mentioned!

Thanks for such a great run down Kristi
