Many successful British TV shows (particularly sitcoms and reality shows) have been remade for the American market. The success of American Idol is based on UK TV's "Pop Idol" but the roots go back even further to the early UK TV shows such as "Stars in their Eyes" and "The Big Time". The winner of "The Big Time" was none other than Sheena Easton who fought through to gain a record contract, with EMI. After that it is history. She became the only UK female artist to have two singles ("9 to 5" – known as "Morning Train" in the US – and "Modern Girl") in the UK top 10 at the same time since 1959.

The amount of reworking of British TV shows varies, with some shows (such as All in the Family) keeping the basic situation and then adding many original features while others have taken complete scripts verbatim (such as Amanda's).

So what program hits have been based British TV shows? The list is long!

Some like "Airline", "Antiques Road Show", "Cash in the Attic" and "Dear John" have kept there names. Other have changed.
"Birds of a Feather" became "Stand By Your Man" when it moved across the pond. "Changing Rooms" became "Trading Places", "Dads Army" became "The Rear Guard", "Man About the House" became "Three's Company". "Tell Death us Do Part" became the very watered down "All in the Family" and so it goes on.

So what about shows from US TV migrating to English TV?

There are relatively few examples of American shows remade for the British market (the majority of these being game shows), as the British television audience are more accepting of the American originals than the US are of original UK version.
Some US remakes have even been imported back into the UK.
Anybody who has seen the two version of "The Office" for instance can see the difference. Some people might even say that this is because American TV has to be more "PC".

All I can say is thank goodness for BBC USA, where smash hit programs like "Top Gear" and "Doctor Who" can still be seen.

Wombat Droppings Fight the Rescession

Fresh from the BBC's strange but true news.

How Wombat Droppings are helping one town fight he effects of the global financial crisis.

Burnie, in the north-west of the state of Tasmania, has been hit by repeated rounds of job cuts.
But despite the gloom, one local industry is thriving by producing handmade paper out of a material no-one else wants - wombat poo.
The novelty paper is a hit with tourists keen to buy a distinctly Australian souvenir from the area.
The wombat, a furry marsupial, lives in the wild only in Australia.
Its characteristic waddle and playful appearance, makes it one of the country's most endearing native creatures.
'Nice organic smell'
In recent years, a company in the port city has been experimenting with paper made from kangaroo droppings - but its popularity has been eclipsed by wombat-inspired products.
Creative Paper manager Darren Simpson says the manufacturing process can be rather unpleasant.

"When we are boiling it, it does smell horrific as you can imagine, but once it has been sterilized and rinsed properly there's no scent left to it. If anything it just gives you a nice organic smell," he said.
He added that it was the tourists themselves who came up with the wombat idea.
"As people were coming through and we were showing them the samples of our paper, they would throw questions at you like 'can you make it from sheep poo or can you make it from koalas?'. And the one that kept popping up more than any other was the wombat."

All the paper is made from the dung of a single animal called Nugget that lives in a wildlife park near Cradle Mountain, one of Tasmania's most popular tourist destinations.

Every day Nugget's droppings are collected by his keeper and sent off to the factory.
Wombats are herbivores and diets loaded with plant fiber make their feces ideal for making some of Australia's most unusual paper.

The wonderful voice and success of Susan Boyle has finally reached the US, all be it taking 4/5 days for Fox news to report on it. She has already appeared on CNN with interviews with Larry King and even Oprah lined up. Now they have found a ten year old recording of Susan singing for a charity record "Cry me a River" It's brilliant!!!

BEYOND BELIEF CLIPS or (THE BBC)

On the BBC web site front page news quite often under a sub heading like “Also In The News” (normally on the right hand side of the page) are the sort of stories that would not normally make headlines and quite often bring a chuckle or two to myself and once shared, with my work mates as well.

Today for instance about some baby snakes that had escaped on a Quantas Flight

“An Australian airliner was grounded after four baby pythons escaped from their container in the aircraft's hold. “

However my favorite story over the last few years has to be the one about a Boeing 737 stuck on an Indian city road…


Residents of the Indian city of Mumbai (Bombay) are wondering how long it will take to remove a disused Boeing 737 that has been abandoned in a busy road.
The decommissioned aircraft was being driven through the city at the weekend when the driver got lost and then abandoned the plane.

The Boeing used to belong to the private company Air Sahara.

Some locals are angry that no action is being taken to move the plane. Others say it is a tourist attraction.

It appears that after taking a wrong turn, the driver found himself facing a flyover that was too low for him to take the plane under.

The driver has not been seen since and no-one is assuming responsibility for the 737.

Restaurant owner Ramji Thapar is one of the puzzled residents of the Chembur area of the city. He woke up Sunday morning to find the aircraft on a giant trailer abandoned on the road.

"Saturday night I shut shop and go home and everything is fine. Sunday morning when I get here, this aircraft is here near my restaurant!"

The fuselage of the decommissioned aircraft, with the engine, wings and tail removed, was being taken by road to the capital Delhi late on Saturday night.
Reports say it was supposed to be used at a flight training academy.

The plane has become the center of attraction with people coming from all over the city to take a look.

"I've been fascinated with planes and never seen one so closely," engineering student Vamsi Shastri said. "It's huge!"

His friend Ankur Rane said, "It's fascinating to see an airplane on the roads when one is only used to seeing cars and auto rickshaws."
No joke

However, for Pradeep Malhotra, who runs a catering service in the area, the plane has become a huge problem because it is parked right in front of his shop.

"My work is suffering because the food cannot be loaded in the big vehicles," he said.
"I have to load it in the smaller vans and then carry them to the bigger ones parked at the back.
"I don't know how they are going to take it out because you can't reverse it, its too big, and you can't go further down the road."

Some residents said they had not complained simply because they assumed that the authorities would be making it a priority to get the plane out of the city.
Five days on, it is still not clear who is responsible for the aircraft and its transfer to Delhi.

Just imagine, waking up to find a plane parked outside your house, and nobody there, willing or knowing anything about moving it.

Not Exactly Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton

Perhaps the most famous Anthony and Cleopatra were Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton in the 1963 film “Cleopatra”.

Now there is a chance that Archaeologists might be on the brink of finding the tomb of doomed lovers.

Work is about to start excavating three sites near a temple in west Alexandria. A series of deep shafts were discovered in which it is thought that Anthony and Cleopatra might be buried.

This is an area where recently, tombs containing ten mummies, as well as a bust of Cleopatra and coins bearing her image were found. Along with a mask believed to belong to Mark Anthony.

Some scholars have stated that Cleopatra, who along with Mark Anthony committed suicide in 30BC after losing the Battle of Actium, was very ugly. The coins actually indicate that Cleopatra was in no way unattractive.

So if she’s found will forensic art experts show Cleopatra as looking like the 3D computer image of her sister Arsinoe.

Simon Cowell Boyles Over

"You can't tell a book by it's cover." Something that has been said many times before except perhaps by authors. This last weekend Simon Cowell along with many other learned this lesson.

Many people in the US watch American Idol, which by the way like many other US TV programs started of in England. From Archie Bunker came from tell Death Us do Part, to the US watered down version of "the Office". A British for of "Idol" has been running under various names in England for decades, in fact one of the earliest winners of such a program was Sheena Eastern.

Over the weekend, during the latest British incarnation a program called "Britain's Got Talent" produced a moment that has the whole country talking and the internet buzzing. Even leaving Simon Cowell open mouthed in amazement.

A lady was introduced, and when asked how old she was she replied with a grin and a wiggle of her comfortable frame... "Forty seven... and that's on both sides"

Susan Boyle (remember that name)before going on stage, Ms. Boyle admitted some self-deprecating facts about herself (she's never been kissed and lives alone with her cat, Pebbles). For those reasons and more, audiences were expecting it was a joke in the William Hung school of singing style. How they were wrong!

Within seconds of her wonderful voice hitting the opening notes of I Dreamed a Dream" from Les Miserables. The audience and judges went from open mouthed disbelief, to a complete standing ovation leaving the judges (including Simon Cowell) either speechless or in tears.


Ms' Boyle has became a Web and national phenomenon overnight. This may have been the first you've heard of her, but it certainly won't be the last. You can watch her performance below...

Few Americans have any idea that there is even such a thing as Boxing Day, let alone why the holiday, which celebrated in places such as Great Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, is a statutory holiday.


Despite its name, Boxing Day, has nothing to do with pugilistic competition. Nor is it a day for people to return unwanted Christmas presents or clear the house of empty boxes.

It is normally held on December 26th, or the following Monday if December 26 falls on a Saturday or Sunday. It became a celebrated holiday in the middle of the nineteenth century, under Queen Victoria.

There are several claims to the origin of Boxing Day all of which might be correct in some form or other.

Some historians say on the day after Christmas, members of the merchant class would give boxes containing food and fruit, clothing, and/or money to trades people and servants. The gifts were an expression of gratitude much like when people receive bonuses, from their employer, for a job well done, today. These gifts, given in boxes, gave the holiday its name, "Boxing Day".

Another theory is that the boxes placed in churches where parishioners deposited coins for the poor were opened and the contents distributed on December 26, which is also the Feast of St. Stephen. One of the seven original deacons of the Christian Church, who were ordained by the Apostles to care for widows and the poor.
This is remarked about in the Christmas Carol, “Good King Wenceslas looked out on the feast of Stephen”.
Where “gifts of flesh (meat), wine and wood” are made to a poor man struggling through the snow.

Today, Boxing Day is spent with family and friends with lots of fun and food, more relaxed than Christmas day with all the rush to cook Christmas dinner etc. It is also a major sporting day, with numerous horse race meeting, soccer games etc taking place.

ACROSS THE POND ARRIVES ON TV

This evening (Thursday) I went along to a studio about forty miles away and was a guest for an hour long interview on the local TV station.

I had met the lady who interviewed I had met three or four years ago and knew we would have fun. We chatted for the full hour, live with no retakes and just a three minute gap for adverts. It was so much fun.

We covered the book, the story, writing, publishing, the UK flag, even some fun pictures re the difference in the language.

I hope to be able to share it with on line friends at a future date. I am sure many will enjoy it.

So the book and I are not just on the radio, it is now "As seen on TV"

CHILD ABUSE MONTH AT "BOOKSAREMYLOVE BLOGSPOT"

In the USA, an estimated 906,000 children are victims of abuse & neglect every year, making child abuse as common as it is shocking. Whether the abuse is physical, emotional, sexual, or neglect, the scars can be deep and long-lasting, often leading to future child abuse.

IMPROVE YOUR BLOG AND BLOGGING

April saw the start of Darren Rowse’s “31 Day Challenge to Build a Better Blog.”

With the huge increase use of blogging many of my writer friends have started following this free course. In fact there are almost 10,000 people following this challenge.

Even on day two of the free challenge I have been working on... and I hope improving my blog.

The cut back on advertising and the increase of blogging, twittering etc has lead to more and more publishers and agents are looking to use the internet to policies an author or a book.

This also relates to pod casts (internet radio). Only yesterday I received a request from a publicist asking if four of her authors could be a guest on my radio show “A BOOK AND A CHAT”.

A fun read with endearing, well written characters - I think you'll enjoy even if you are not a teenager anymore.

UK BLOG - THE GRAND NATIONAL

THE GRAND NATIONAL – SOME INFORMATION FOR AMERICANS

Yesterday was one of the biggest sporting events of the year. I don’t mean the play offs of the basketball, or the ice hockey must wins. And I surely don’t mean to pre-season baseball hit about.

Yesterday was “The Grand National”

The what? I hear colonials asking, as of course there was no coverage on any American TV.

THE GRAND NATIONAL A BRIEF HISTORY

The Grand National Horse Race is often called the world's greatest steeplechase.

The race is one of the most famous steeplechases in the world. It is a unique test of horsemanship for the rider and also a test of a great significance for a horse.
The course is nearly two and a quarter miles in length and has 16 unique fences including the famous Bechers Brook. The fences have an added problem for horses, the famous drop fences where the landing side of the fence is lower than the take off side, this means the horse approaching the fence is unaware of the drop until in the air.

At The Chair Fence the reverse of this occurs. It is the biggest fence on the course and the landing side is higher than the take off.

In the National the horses have to complete almost two circuits of the course and jump 30 fences and then complete a long 494 yard run in which has been the downfall of many in the past.

There are two fences that are jumped only once and this is on the first circuit and they are the famous Chair and the water jump.

The first 'Official Grand National' was in 1839 though history does mention a race much the same as far back as 1820. The race has always been held at Aintree, near Liverpool except during the First World War, when it was held at a racecourse at Gatwick now the site of one of London's busiest Airports. It was however not run between 1941 and 1945 and the course at this time was used for military purposes.

The only other time the race has not taken place was in 1993 was again to be a landmark year as the race had to be declared void after a second false start was not heard by half of the jockeys who went on to complete a full circuit of the track. A number of jockeys actually did a second round and they did not know until the end of the four and a half miles that the race would be declared void for a false start. This may seem strange but around this time there were a lot of protests being held on the course and the jockeys ignored the officials trying to stop them as they thought wrongly that they were protesters. The horse that finished first that day was Esha Ness now known as the horse that won the National that never was.

The 150th running of the race in 1997 was another bizarre story when a bomb scare meant that the course had to be evacuated and the race postponed until the Monday.

The Grand National sees nearly the whole country putting small bets on there favorite horses, and with the same horses coming back year after year people can follow there favorite horse. The great “Red Rum” for instance won the race three times, and came second twice.

1967 saw the biggest price winner; Foinavon won the race after he was the only horse to jump a very small fence in the race. There was a great pile up at the fence and this horse ridden by John Buckingham when on to score at odds of 100/1. The fence was later named after the horse.

With forty horses to choose from people pick names that they like for instance in 1992 it was the year if the general election (where the UK votes for a prime minister) a horse called Party Politics won.

There is always plenty of excitement the event being watched by many, many countries (except of course America). Yesterday was no exception with the winner a horse called Mon Mome ran away with yesterday's race, turning what still looked a fiercely competitive renewal two fences from home into a procession. The no big issue except the horse started at odds of 100/1 matching that of Foinavon, this time though there was no luck. 100/1 means for every pound/dollar you bet on the horse you got a hundred back in winnings. There was some big celebration going on at various locations around the UK after that windfall yesterday.



Once again the Aintree Grand National -- was full excitement, drama, courage. The country cheered, some celebrated however here in the US you would not even know the race existed.

Normally over the weekend I just post my UK blog, however after this morning’s radio blog, some news on interviews and a fresh review it looks like an extra blog this weekend
Sunday will be all about this great sporting weekend in England where almost the whole country and a little bet on a race that has been taking place for over 168 years

Rock and Roll is hear to stay!

Tonight I rolled back the clock, and lived again in my twenties.

I went and watched Sha Na Na in concert.

If Woodstock was 1969 it must have been early to mid seventies they first came over to England, and through the next few years I must have seen them 4 or 5 times.
Three of the original people are still in the group, Donny, Jacko and Screaming Scott Simon. (Did you know he wrote the song Sandy in Greace the film/musical?)

Bowzer has his own group in case your wondering.

The theater was about 70mins drive away the longest I've driven since my back Op and I will be feeling it in the morning. But for tonight I am flying on the atmosphere...nothing else it wasn't Woodstock all over again.

The place held about 500 I guess and was fairly full, I got a seat in the third row! The opening act twas the Sentinels a great Doowop group. Then we all started rocking. I even went up on the stage to do the hand jive with them when they sang Willie and the hand jive. So tonight I feel twenty again, in the morning it will be more like eighty, but it was worth every ache and pain.

Most Americans have heard of Johnny Appleseed, born John Chapman (September 26, 1774 – February 18, 1845), was an American pioneer nurseryman who introduced apple trees to large parts of Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. He became an American legend while still alive, largely because of his kind and generous ways, his great leadership in conservation and the symbolic importance of apples. But how many have heard of Ryan Cheese Head from Green Bay?

Perhaps no body, perhaps there never was a Ryan Cheese Head. However there must have been somebody who spread the word about cheese throughout America, whoever it was did a ruddy brilliant job.

Never mind the Big Apple, America is one huge cheese.

It doesn’t matter where you go, any restaurant, snack bar or a food outlet of any sort and order a meal it will come with CHEESE. Try getting a ham roll, egg and bacon on a roll, even Tuna on a roll and it will come with cheese, even if you make a point of saying “NO CHEESE” it quite often still arrives with cheese. The number of times I have gone to a restaurant looked through the menu to see what there might be that came without cheese, ordered what I hoped would be okay only for it to arrive covered in what I would class as mouse food.

It’s not that I don’t eat cheese completely, or am allergic to the dairy product, it’s just I prefer not to eat the stuff.

So here’s to Ryan Cheese head. Who lead the cheese revolution out of Wisconsin, and spread the word throughout America.

You may wonder with all the love of cheese what the mice in America are fond of. Well anybody who ever had Terminex or any other pest control do some work for them, will know that in the USA they bait the traps with “peanut butter”… but then that’s another story.

After reaching 60 reviews at Amazon, today along comes number 61 another 4 star review which included…

Although this book will be most enjoyed by teens, it is also quite enjoyable for adults. I found myself reminded of what it was like to be a teenager in love: dancing around each other, learning to trust, and the exhilaration of a first kiss.

Fred is headed to America to spend time with family friends while his parents are away. Although he's apprehensive at first, he soon falls head over heels for Brit and the two are inseparable. But then Brit tells Fred a dark secret and it's up to Fred to help right the wrongs.

It's a rare romance that brings in some real-life unpleasantness for the characters to deal with and Across the Pond does that without losing its romance or charm. The book stays enjoyable and holds your interest right to the very end.

ACROSS THE POND REACHES NEW LEVELS AT AMAZON - Storyheart

Today I reached a new level at Amazon. That is receiving my

“SIXTIETH REVIEW”

since the book came out in October 2008.



I know, I may have said this in a blogs in the past, but these comments coming from people who have read the book, mean more to me than if I was signed up by some major publisher.


Of course I’d love to have more people read the book, and more people enjoy the book. I’d really love a phone call from


Asking if my book could be used or the next “High School Musical” production.


Oh well one can dream, though I’ve actually had a couple of reviews stating they could see “Across the Pond” as a film.

Todays number 60 was another 4 star review, and included.

This was an adorable young love story about Fred from England, who is sort of forced to go visit his parents' friends in America. What he doesn't know awaits him "across the pond" is their hottie daughter, Brittany, whom Fred instantly falls in love with. Add in all kinds of language problems, a bully who thinks taking advantage of young girls is fun, and the sport of baseball, and you have a love story as ageless as time itself.
